Previously, at 6 p.m. on December 4, after drinking at a bar in Xuan Thanh commune, Dang Trong Giap was waiting for his friend to go home when he heard swearing. Seeing Phan Xuan Hoanh (living in Vinh Thanh commune, Yen Thanh) standing nearby, thinking that Hoanh was cursing at him, Giap went into the bar, took out a pair of scissors and stabbed Hoanh in the neck.
