Vietnam’s coffee exports are recording record numbers. According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), in February 2025, the amount of coffee exported reached 193,031 tons, bringing in 1.08 billion USD. This is the first time Vietnam’s coffee export turnover has exceeded 1 billion USD in a month.
In the first two months of the year, Vietnam exported 343,331 tons of coffee, earning over 1.87 billion USD. Of this, green coffee accounted for 315,615 tons, with a value of about 1.65 billion USD. Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of VICOFA, said this success came from a proactive export strategy. Foreign-invested enterprises contributed significantly, accounting for 27% of export output, 28% of green coffee turnover and up to 86% of processed coffee.
The average export price in the first two months of the year reached 5,574.5 USD/ton, up 76.3% over the same period in 2024. In February alone, coffee prices set a new record at 5,596 USD/ton. The largest markets for Vietnamese coffee remain Germany, Italy and Japan, accounting for 16.6%, 9.4% and 8.2% of market share, respectively. Compared to the same period last year, export value to Germany increased by 53%, to Italy by 5.6% and to Japan by 10.4%.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, besides gold, coffee is one of the most popular commodities on world exchanges. Currently, the price difference between robusta and arabica coffee is about 3,000 USD/ton. When the price of arabica increases, many roasters tend to switch to using robusta - the type of coffee that Vietnam is leading the world in exporting. This brings a great advantage, helping the price of Vietnamese coffee continue to increase.

Coffee traders and roasters around the world are cutting purchases to a minimum as prices soar. At the National Coffee Association’s annual conference in Houston this week, many delegates were surprised by the 70% increase in ICE Arabica futures since November 2024, the benchmark price for coffee trading worldwide.
Renan Chueiri, CEO of ELCAFE CA in Ecuador, said this was the first time his company had not sold all of its annual production in March. Normally, the entire production would have been sold by this time, but this year the company had sold less than 30%. The sharp rise in coffee prices has left many customers with cash flow problems and unable to buy in large quantities as before.
The main reason for the rise in coffee prices is the decrease in production in important coffee growing regions, especially Brazil – the world’s leading coffee producer. The decrease in supply has made traders cautious, buying only what they need instead of placing orders for the future. A coffee broker, who did not want to be named, said that no one wants to take risks at this time.
In Brazil, many recent transactions are conducted in a more secure way. After the deal is closed, the buyer has seven days to visit the farm or warehouse to inspect the coffee quality. If the coffee is up to standard, they pay immediately and ship the goods immediately.
