Livestock is a sector that has a large impact on greenhouse gas emissions, the main cause of climate change. Experts say that livestock emits a lot of greenhouse gases, mainly from the process of respiration, digestion and waste of animals. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the composition of animal feed, reduce the use of vegetable protein, especially soybeans, and increase the use of ingredients that emit less greenhouse gases.

According to the Vietnam Animal Husbandry Association, the total pig herd in the country is currently 25.549 million, including 3 million sows. Vietnam ranks 5th in the world in terms of pig number and 6th in meat production. Each year, our country produces about 11 million tons of pig feed, accounting for about 56% of total animal feed production.

Greenhouse gas emissions from livestock production include electricity and energy use in feed processing, as well as in rearing and hatching. Respiration, digestion and animal waste are the main sources of emissions, particularly from grazing cattle and then pig production.

A major challenge in pig farming today is how to provide adequate nutrition for livestock at a reasonable cost, while protecting the environment. Crude protein is the second most expensive ingredient in pig feed formulas. Reducing crude protein content is not only economically beneficial but also improves animal welfare and health.

To grow well, animals need a large amount of nitrogen, which they absorb through food. The nitrogen that is not consumed is excreted in feces and urine, and this is closely related to the diet. Therefore, to reduce nitrogen loss, it is necessary to process food to increase the digestibility rate, especially nitrogen. This solution can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially N2O. Currently, livestock farming in Europe is focusing on this method.
