Oil prices today, September 18: World oil prices cooled down after a sharp increase, as the market considered supply risks from Russia and awaited the US interest rate decision.

World oil prices today

As of 5:00 a.m. on September 18, oil prices fell slightly after rising more than 1% in the previous session. Specifically, Brent crude fell 27 cents, equivalent to 0.4%, to 68.20 USD/barrel. US WTI crude also fell 31 cents, about 0.5%, to 64.21 USD/barrel.

Earlier, these two types of oil recorded an increase of more than 1% due to concerns that supplies from Russia could be disrupted.

The main cause of market volatility was Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.

Pipeline operator Transneft has warned oil producers may be forced to cut production if the attacks continue, adding to uncertainty over global crude supplies.

If the damage to Russia's energy infrastructure is only temporary, oil prices will continue to fluctuate in a range of around $5 a barrel, according to analyst John Evans from PVM Oil Associates.

He also said that with the sanctions deadlock and OPEC supply rising, the only factor supporting oil prices is the declining distillate stock levels as winter approaches.

In addition to geopolitical factors, the oil market is also watching the US Federal Reserve (Fed) meeting on September 16-17. Many forecasts suggest that the Fed will cut interest rates by another 25 basis points, thereby affecting energy consumption demand and oil price trends in the coming time.

Separately, preliminary data from the American Petroleum Institute showed that U.S. crude and gasoline inventories fell last week, while distillate inventories rose. Official results from the U.S. Energy Information Administration will be released soon, with expectations that crude inventories fell, while gasoline and distillate inventories rose.

On the other side of the supply chain, Kazakhstan resumed oil exports via the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline on September 13, after being disrupted last month due to an oil contamination incident. This move has somewhat eased supply concerns in the international market.
