(Baonghean) - The poultry flocks that have recently been affected by influenza in Nghe An all have one thing in common: they have not been vaccinated against influenza. According to statistics from the authorities, the vaccination rate for avian influenza in the whole province has only reached nearly 10% of the total flock.

Ms. Tran Thi Dang - Chief Veterinarian of Dong Vinh Ward (Vinh City) said: Because people are not aware of vaccinating poultry, when there is a pathogen, it is easy to spread widely. After the outbreak of influenza, the ward coordinated with the City Veterinary Station to propagate and mobilize people to disinfect and sprinkle lime powder to treat barns. At the same time, quarantine checkpoints were set up to prevent people from bringing live poultry, poultry products and eggs into and out of the area.

Bordering the avian influenza outbreak in Dong Vinh ward, the potential risk of disease spreading in Hung Dong commune is very high. The whole commune has hundreds of small-scale livestock households, with over 21,000 chickens and 1,250 ducks. Currently, the local government has promoted and mobilized people to implement epidemic prevention and control work. However, due to small-scale livestock farming practices, many households have not yet vaccinated their livestock.

In Dien Xuan commune (Dien Chau), not far from the Dien Nguyen avian influenza epidemic area, the whole commune has more than 1,060 small-scale poultry farming households. At present, when avian influenza has appeared in Dien Chau district, farmers are still not aware of vaccinating their livestock against the disease. Mr. Ngo Quang Trung - Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee said: In the commune, the ban on trading and slaughtering has been deployed and implemented well, but vaccination has not been done, because after 1 week of deployment for people to register, up to now, the whole commune has only had over 30 households registered to vaccinate their poultry against H5N1 influenza.

According to Mr. Dang Van Minh - Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, because livestock farmers are still not aware of the issue of vaccination, do not deeply understand the dangers of influenza and do not grasp the legal regulations on this issue.

According to the provisions of the Veterinary Law, livestock breeders are responsible for spending money to buy vaccines to vaccinate their livestock; however, with the current price of 380 - 400 VND/dose of vaccine, the amount of money spent is not large compared to the benefits that vaccination brings.

According to Circular 07 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, ducks are required to be vaccinated against two types of vaccines: avian influenza and cholera; chickens are required to be vaccinated against avian influenza and Newcastle; quail, geese and swans are required to be vaccinated against avian influenza. However, in reality, except for large concentrated farms, the remaining small-scale poultry flocks, even those in farms with hundreds of birds, have not been vaccinated.

Nghe An is a province with a large poultry population, with nearly 20 million birds. However, through regular and supplementary vaccinations, according to statistics from the provincial Veterinary Department, less than 10% of them have been vaccinated against avian influenza.

Strengthening epidemic prevention and control

To control the epidemic from spreading widely, Vinh City Veterinary Station is urging localities to urgently vaccinate poultry against H5N1 influenza. Implement many measures to effectively prevent the spread as well as new outbreaks. At the same time, launch a month of disinfection action from February 27 to March 27. During this time, disinfect and spray 14 wards and communes with 350 liters of Han-Lodine chemicals on an area of 700,000m2. At the same time, carry out spring vaccination for the entire livestock.

Postpone meeting to prevent bird flu

Mr. Nguyen Duy Minh - Secretary of the Thanh Chi Commune Party Committee (Thanh Chuong) said: "Although there are many busy tasks, in order to implement the telegram and plan of the District People's Committee on "focusing on implementing measures to prevent and control bird flu", the commune Party Committee and government have postponed some unnecessary meetings, taking advantage of the time to direct the spraying of disinfectants and widely propagandize to the people about the importance of the campaign and the harmful effects of bird flu".

Ms. Dang Thi Minh Tam - Deputy Head of Vinh City Veterinary Station said: Vaccination must be considered as a means to optimize biosafety measures and must be coordinated with monitoring to promptly detect cases of changes in the nature of the virus (antigenic changes), and must be carried out with appropriate vaccines that are produced and quality-tested to ensure compliance with international standards in the OIE Manual of Standards.

The Department of Animal Health recommends: Vaccination is currently a means to support disease elimination, both as a means of disease control and reducing virus retention in the environment. Disease control by vaccination can be an initial measure in the disease elimination program. Currently, the H5N1 avian influenza pathogen is still residing in the environment such as clinging to grass and trees, hidden in water sources. If livestock households do not thoroughly vaccinate their poultry, the possibility of widespread H5N1 influenza outbreaks is inevitable.
