According to the Ministry of Health, diabetes has become one of the common causes of illness and premature death in most countries.

On March 12, speaking at the opening ceremony of a training course for health workers on diabetes management, Associate Professor, Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) said that diabetes has become one of the common causes of illness and premature death in most countries.

In Vietnam, according to the results of the 2012 national diabetes epidemiological survey conducted by the Central Endocrinology Hospital, the national prevalence of diabetes in adults is 5.42%, the rate of undiagnosed diabetes in the community is 63.6%. Up to 67.8% of inpatients have non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental illness, traumatic injuries, etc.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue delivered the opening speech of the class.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, diabetes is like a pandemic in the world, strongly affecting people's health, disease patterns and socio-economics of each country. Meanwhile, a major challenge in accessing and providing medical services for diabetes care in Vietnam is the limited level of medical staff, retraining, continuous training, updating new and in-depth knowledge about diabetes has not met the treatment needs.

To prevent and control diabetes in Vietnam, from 2002-2015, the Diabetes Prevention and Control Project was established and implemented. The Ministry of Health has consolidated and completed the endocrine examination and treatment network (Clinics, Departments, Centers, Endocrine Hospitals...) in the examination, treatment and prevention system; Increased community awareness of diabetes; Improved capacity for health workers; Enhanced capacity of grassroots health care in prevention, early detection and management of diabetes; Improved professional guidelines; Strengthened information and reporting systems; Enhanced international cooperation, scientific research...

Therefore, the objective of the training course is to enhance the capacity of health workers from disease prevention propaganda, to early detection of cases, diagnosis and treatment to monitoring, management and supervision in the community.

The Ministry of Health also directed the implementation of the Diabetes Treatment Department model at the central, provincial, district and community levels, moving towards diabetes management with the family doctor clinic model.

Within the framework of the “Diabetes Care Program in Vietnam”, the “Diabetes Training Program” has organized training courses to enhance the capacity of health workers and clinical facilities in the treatment and management of diabetes.

The training program is designed and implemented in 2 forms, training for trainers and training for health workers. The course will focus on raising community awareness of diabetes; Increasing the number of health workers trained in diabetes care; Collecting data on the situation of diabetes care; Improving the infrastructure for diabetes care in Vietnam and improving diabetes care for children and pregnant women…

Since 2012 until this course, the Diabetes Training Program has trained 300 trainers and 850 health care workers in diabetes management.

The Ministry of Health hopes that the number of doctors trained in diabetes management will contribute to improving the quality of care and quality of life for patients./.
