Speaking at a press conference after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that at the meeting, he and his Russian counterpart discussed the situation in Syria.
The German and Russian foreign ministers said that millions of people could face unpredictable disasters in case the Syrian government launches a full-scale military offensive in Idlib province to seize control from rebels and terrorists.
During the discussion, the two sides also mentioned the possibility that the Syrian government could use chemical weapons in the province. Mr. Heiko Maas emphasized that Germany hopes that Russia will use its influence to persuade Damascus to abandon its intention to use chemical weapons as well as to withdraw its plan for a major attack on Idlib province.
In recent weeks, the Syrian government army has been preparing to launch a full-scale offensive to liberate Idlib province from rebels and terrorists. However, the United Nations and humanitarian organizations are concerned that the general offensive could cause an unprecedented humanitarian disaster in the more than 7-year conflict in Syria./.
