While the prices of vegetables, tubers and fruits have decreased, the price of green onions has increased sharply, reaching an unprecedented high of 20,000 VND/kg at the garden. There were years when green onions had increased sharply in price, but only at 17,000 VND/kg.
On February 5, a survey of the scallion market in rural markets showed that at Roc market in Trung Thanh commune (Yen Thanh), scallion was sold for 30,000 VND/kg, while old, large-tube scallion was sold for 25,000 VND/kg.
Ms. Ho Thi Thuy in Hamlet 6, Quynh Minh Commune (Quynh Luu) happily said: Her family has nearly 3 sao of fertile land specializing in growing vegetables. Of which, 1.5 sao is for green onions, the rest is for growing other vegetables, tubers and fruits. After Tet, the price of green onions has increased continuously, up to today it has increased to 20,000 VND/kg. With 1.5 sao of onions, her family estimates to harvest about 3 tons of onions, earning about 60 million VND. Ms. Thuy said that after the harvest, her family will continue to grow onions.

Mr. Ho Minh Phuoc, a trader buying onions in Quynh Minh commune, said that the area of scallion in the coastal area of Quynh Luu district is not large, while customers in the provinces have placed large orders, so the supply cannot meet the demand. On February 4, Mr. Phuoc's group of traders bought 7 tons of onions, which will be shipped to Ha Tinh, Quang Binh... for consumption on February 5.
It is known that the price of green onions has increased sharply in recent days because this is the crop season for this vegetable. Quynh Luong has a vegetable cultivation area of 220 hectares, of which about 40 hectares are green onions, but only 10-15% of the area is ready for harvest. The output of green onions is low, not meeting market demand, so traders are hunting for them right in the fields.

According to Mr. Dau Duc Nam - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district, the current onion growing area in the Quynh Luu coastal plain is about 100 hectares, but some of that area has scallion areas that people use for seeds. The sharp increase in onion prices at the beginning of this year is due to "supply not meeting demand". Families who sell onions during this time have high incomes. However, people should not focus on switching to growing onions to follow the market, because when the acreage increases suddenly, the price will drop.
