According to the investigation, Tinh, Lam and Du joined the group."The Association of Debtors Who Want to Take Risks"on Facebook and became friends with each other. When they were at their wits' end, the three of them sent private messages to each other, inviting them to rob a phone store. However, the plan was canceled because they saw that the store had many surveillance cameras.
After discussing, the group agreed to rob Mr. Tuan Anh, who often sells used phones online. They sent someone pretending to be a customer to call Mr. Tuan Anh, asking him to come to his house to look at the phone. To commit the crime, the group ordered 2 pepper sprays, 1 lighter gun, 3 knives, 1 roll of tape, 2 new phone SIM cards and 2 plastic glasses to commit the crime.
At around 4:00 p.m. on January 8, in order to avoid being detected, Tinh, Lam, and Du took 3 motorbike taxis to the HH Linh Dam urban area, Hoang Liet ward, Hoang Mai district. After using a "junk" SIM card to call the homeowner, all 3 took the stairs to his house on the 3rd floor of building HH1A to avoid being recorded by security cameras.
When the homeowner opened the door and invited him in and showed him his phone, the group used pepper spray to attack, punched, kicked, and tied him up with the tools they brought with them. They threatened to kill the victim to put pressure on him, then ransacked and took away 4 expensive phones.

Lam divided the stolen property into two parts, one for Du and one for Tinh each. The three suspects escaped in different directions.
The next day, when the incident was exposed in the media, Lam fled to Ho Chi Minh City. From January 13-15, Lam was arrested while hiding in Ho Chi Minh City, Tinh hid in Hai Duong city and Du hid in Bac Tu Liem district. The police seized 4 cell phones as evidence in the case along with 1 col-type lighter, 2 motorbikes and 20cm long white plastic zip ties.
According to the police, this is a very serious case. The suspects, who knew each other on social media, teamed up and discussed committing a reckless robbery. After committing the crime, they fled everywhere, making it difficult to capture them.
A criminologist assessed that the prolonged outbreak of Covid-19 has caused many young people to lose their jobs and have no money to spend. Moreover, the approaching Lunar New Year makes them more reckless and daring to rob property to get money to spend. Therefore, people need to be extremely vigilant as daring crimes tend to increase more than every year in the days leading up to Tet.
