Coach Alfred Riedl: Many details in Cong Vinh's autobiography need to be corrected

Notably, Cong Vinh said that he was not given a chance by coach Riedl even though he won the Golden Ball at the age of 19 (2004). Regarding this, coach Riedl shared in a Vietnamese newspaper today as follows: “At that time, Van Quyen and Phan Thanh Binh were the main strikers of U23 Vietnam.

They were also the main players in the national team's lineup in the match against Korea in Oman (Asian Cup 2004 qualifiers in 2003). Van Quyen was the team's number one choice at that time.

As for Thanh Binh, Cong Vinh wrote completely wrong. There is no way I let Thanh Binh play as the main player because I consider him as my son."

In his autobiography, Cong Vinh criticized coach Alfred Riedl for being conservative and relying on overlapping play. The Austrian coach responded: “The tactics of the match depend on the quality of the players but also on the opponent. It is very difficult to play football in Southeast Asia in the Barcelona style.”

“Is Vinh a selfish player? I have never seen Vinh being selfish in matches. I will not argue about a player always putting his own interests above the national team. But obviously, anyone wants to play football and wants to show off,” the Austrian coach shared with the press.
