(Baonghean) - Black pigs are familiar and valuable livestock in the mountainous areas of Nghe An. In Con Cuong district, the government is taking measures to expand the herd of these precious pigs to ensure supply for the Lunar New Year.

Since March 2019, based on households with sufficient conditions for raising pigs, Con Cuong district has supported 6 households in 3 communes: Mau Duc, Mon Son and Thach Ngan. Depending on the actual conditions of each family's barn, each household is allowed to raise 16, 24, 32 or 64 pigs, each weighing 10.5 kg. The total of 6 households is 192 pigs, equivalent to a value of 298 million VND.

With the motto of the State and the people working together, 6 households invested an additional 84 million VND, increasing the total herd of the model to 240 pigs. Households were supported with training in breeding techniques and disease prevention for the local black pig herd, and built stables that met standards, were solid, airy, and clean.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long's household in Thong Nhat village, Mau Duc commune, has implemented a model of raising 40 pigs, of which he received 32 pigs from the State. As someone with experience in pig farming, Mr. Long invested in expanding the barn, having a biogas tank system to maintain environmental hygiene and take advantage of gas.

After 6 months, the breed has grown well and adapted to the climate. Mr. Long and other households only use ready-made foods such as wine lees, duckweed, banana leaves, wild vegetables, raising them in barns combined with free-range grazing on the farm...

Currently, each black pig in Mr. Long's farm weighs 45 to 50 kg. Black pigs are sold for meat to generate working capital, with a selling price of 45,000 VND/kg of live weight. After deducting expenses, households earn an average net profit of 1 million VND/pig...

Focusing on pig farming for many years, Mr. Vi Van Hai's family in Ke Gia village, Thach Ngan commune also has a stable income, exporting 2-3 batches each year, each batch about 20 pigs, each year the income from pig farming Mr. Hai's family earns about 60-70 million VND.

According to the commitment to support livestock farming, households must maintain the model for at least 2 years. The number of pigs left for breeding after the first litter will be handed over 20% of the number of pigs initially supported so that the commune can continue to support poor and near-poor households to adopt them to develop their family economy.

Local black pigs are a livestock product that is very popular in the market because of their delicious, fragrant and clean meat. This is considered an advantage for Con Cuong to promote the local black pig brand. Through the implementation of the model, people have also been proactive in disease prevention, especially African swine fever.

Not only building the above model, but currently Con Cuong district also has dozens of farms that have developed local black pig breeding, bringing in high income, serving the supply for Tet. This is considered a new direction of strong development in commercial pig breeding in Con Cuong.

By promoting the local black pig breed of people in remote areas, the district also creates conditions for the development of the economic model from spontaneous, self-sufficient to commodity-based livestock farming, proactive in disease prevention. Currently, not only households benefit from the program, Con Cuong farmers also promote commercial black pig farming.
