The craft of making do paper from niet trees in Ren village (now Phong Phu village, Nghi Phong commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province) may have appeared more than 300 years ago. Although it is a side job, existing alongside farming, it plays an important role in ensuring a stable life for the people here. Currently, although it has been lost for a long time, the do paper craft is still preserved in Nghi Phong. The main raw material for making dó paper is the bark of the niệt tree, the second raw material is the sap of the bìm bìm tree, which locals often call the khoai mam tree. The niệt tree usually grows in forests in mountainous districts such as Quế Phong, Quỳ Châu, and Tường Dương (Nghe An). In Hà Tĩnh, the tree usually grows in Nghi Xuân and Kỳ Anh districts. The bìm bìm tree is often planted by farmers around their houses. In the photo: Vinh city students enthusiastically participate in the process of stripping the bark. Photo: Thanh Nga

After being stripped, the bark will be soaked in water for 24 hours, then scooped up and stuffed with a moderate amount of lime to make the bark whiter and cook faster. After stuffing with lime, it will be put back in the pot and cooked for another 24 hours. Photo: Thanh Nga

The water part of the powder is sifted through a sieve to create a thin solution. Then the morning glory resin is poured into the thin powder solution, stirring continuously until smooth. This is considered the most difficult step. Photo: Thanh Nga
