However, in the joint statement, world leaders also stressed that this remains a "permanently increasing" risk.
The joint statement affirmed: "Much remains to be done to prevent non-state actors from acquiring nuclear and radioactive materials, which could be used for malign purposes... We reaffirm our commitment to the common goal of nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy."
In the joint statement, world leaders also pledged to promote a stable international environment by reducing the risk of nuclear terrorism and enhancing nuclear security.
Attached to the joint statement is an annex containing five action plans to promote cooperation between the countries attending the conference and international agencies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Interpol.
This year’s Nuclear Security Summit, taking place over two days from March 31 to April 1 (US time), aims to bring the international community closer together to deal with the threat of nuclear terrorism globally. It is also a forum for world leaders to reaffirm their highest level of commitment to strengthening nuclear and radioactive material security and combating nuclear terrorism.
