(Baonghean.vn) - Stuck between the Nam Non and Ban Ve hydroelectric plants, hundreds of households in Luong Minh commune (Tuong Duong, Nghe An) are at risk of losing their homes every time the hydroelectric plant releases water.

Nam Non Hydropower Plant is located in Ban La, Luong Minh Commune (Tuong Duong District), and has been storing water since 2014. This hydropower plant has a capacity of 20 MW with 2 generators, located on the same river as Ban Ve Hydropower Plant, more than 10 km downstream. Photo. HT |

However, since the water was stored to operate the factory, hundreds of households living on both sides of the river have been restless. According to Mr. Vi Dinh Phuc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Luong Minh Commune, the commune recently conducted a survey, and the results showed that 101 households in 4 villages were at risk of losing their homes due to landslides. "Since the Nam Non hydropower plant started storing water, seven houses have been swept away by the river. The remaining households are living in fear of losing their homes and their lives," said Mr. Phuc. Photo: HT |

The most recent was the house of Mr. Lim Van Khat (30 years old, living in La village). "That night, when we heard the hydroelectric plant announce the bottom discharge, our family of three did not dare to sleep. At 2am, the house started to slide down the river," Mr. Khat said. After taking his wife and children to escape, Mr. Khat tried to run into the house to save his belongings but only managed to pull his motorbike and refrigerator out onto the street. In just a few minutes, the entire house and grocery store floated down the river, leaving only the foundation. Photo. HT |

Having no home, Mr. Lim was later lent land by an acquaintance and built a temporary hut to live in. Around this area, there are still many long cracks that can collapse into the river at any time. Photo. HT |

Previously, also in La village, the house of Ms. Lo Thi Van (38 years old) was suddenly pulled down into the Nam Non River. The whole family was lucky to escape but all their property and the house were lost. Ms. Van's family then tried to salvage the bare wooden part of the kitchen from the riverbed. Photo. HT |

Not only affected by Nam Non hydropower plant, people in Luong Minh also suffered heavy losses because they are located downstream of Ban Ve hydropower plant. In early March this year, the largest hydropower plant in the North Central region suddenly released water at the same time as Nam Non hydropower plant below was releasing water, causing Mr. Lo Van Thuy to lose all 4 fish cages. "Ban Ve hydropower plant released water but did not notify anyone. Luckily, when my whole family had just reached the shore, the water poured down like an earthquake. Now my family seems to be bankrupt because of the hydropower plant," Mr. Thuy said. After the incident, Luong Minh commune made a record and, together with Mr. Thuy, requested the hydropower plant to compensate, but half a year has passed and there has been no response. Photo. HT |

Chairman of the People's Committee of Luong Minh commune, said that people here are very miserable because of the sudden water discharge from two hydroelectric plants. "Fish farming on floating cages is very profitable, but now no one dares to do it anymore because they are afraid of the hydroelectric plant releasing water," said Mr. Phuc. Photo. HT |

Among the households that lost their homes, some have received financial support from the government to find land and build new houses. The remaining households, who built their houses after the hydroelectric dam stored water, have not received any support. Finding a new location to build a house is the biggest problem here. "For now, we encourage people to find land to move to. The problem of finding a place to resettle is very difficult, because Luong Minh is mainly mountainous, and the land is now very cramped. It is not easy to find a small piece of land to build a house," said the Chairman of the People's Committee of Luong Minh commune. |
