The police have prosecuted two people claiming to be reporters for extorting money from traffic police.

Speaking to reporters, Lieutenant Colonel Phan Tan Ca - Deputy Head of the Criminal Police Department of Tien Giang Province Police said that the investigation agency has prosecuted and temporarily detained Phan Van Dung (54 years old, residing in Ho Chi Minh City) and Nguyen Van Uan (39 years old, residing in Dak Lak Province) for 4 months to investigate the act of "Extortion of property".

Lieutenant Colonel Ca said that the investigation will clarify the actions of the two suspects and their accomplices (if any).

At the investigation agency, Dung stated that on July 28, he and a group of people went to meet an officer of the Road Traffic Police Department (PC67) of Tien Giang Provincial Police. There, the group showed the clip and claimed that it contained images of violations during the patrol by the Traffic Police. After that, Dung and the group left.

Next, Dung called the traffic police officer and threatened him, forcing him to pay 250 million VND to not write the article. Dung threatened that if he did not agree to the above request, he would write an article and send the clip to the Tien Giang Provincial Party Committee's Internal Affairs Committee. After the call ended, Dung arranged to meet the traffic police officer at a hotel in My Tho City. After that, he changed the location to the Trung Luong - Ho Chi Minh City Expressway toll station (in Binh Chanh District).

The group of people claiming to be journalists threatening and demanding 250 million VND was reported by traffic police officers to the unit's leaders and the Criminal Police Department.

The Tien Giang Provincial Police Department has directed professional departments to verify and investigate.

On the afternoon of July 29, Dung was caught red-handed while receiving 250 million VND. Uan, the driver who was accompanying him, was also invited to be questioned and detained. Both of them could not present relevant documents to prove that they were working in journalism.

In connection with this case, the owner of a car rental service in Dak Lak province went to Tien Giang Provincial Police to report that through an intermediary, a group of people claiming to be reporters rented a car for urgent travel. Later, this vehicle was used by Dung and Uan to “extort property” and is being detained by Tien Giang Police for investigation.
