The purpose of the exam is to help students grasp basic knowledge of Mathematics and apply this understanding in practice, thereby inspiring learning.

On March 20, the International Kangaroo Math Contest (IKMC) was held for the first time in Vietnam for students from grades 1 to 6 studying at schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The test is presented in English and Vietnamese with a 3-part structure from easy, medium to difficult and each question in each part is worth 3, 4, 5 points respectively. The test for grades 1-2 consists of 18 questions with a time limit of 45 minutes. The test for grades 3-4 consists of 24 questions with a time limit of 60 minutes. The test for grades 5-6 consists of 30 questions with a time limit of 75 minutes. Students who leave an answer blank will not get points, but if they fill in the wrong answer, 1/4 of the score for that question will be deducted.

The organizers said that the purpose of the exam is to help students grasp basic knowledge of Mathematics and apply their understanding in practice, thereby creating inspiration for learning not only in the scope of Mathematics. In addition, access to international exams will help students increase their confidence, competitiveness, and ability to integrate internationally.

Teacher Tran Phuong (Deputy Director of the Center for Talent Development Support) assessed that the Kangaroo exam questions are very diverse and high-class, so the results can be used as a basis not only to classify mathematical thinking ability but also to evaluate students' IQ.

The Kangaroo International Mathematics Competition was first held in France in 1991. It is the largest mathematics competition in the world, attracting over 6,000,000 candidates from about 50 countries each year.

In the 2015-2016 school year, the IEG Academy for Thinking and Skills Development cooperated with the Center for Research and Application of Educational Sciences (CERA), University of Education, Vietnam National University, Hanoi - the unit designated by the International Kangaroo Committee as the national coordinator in Vietnam, to organize the Kangaroo International Math Competition..
