Hoang Mai town leaders check the consumption of chayote

(Baonghean.vn) - Before the information reported by Nghe An Newspaper about the current situation of falling prices of chayote, on the afternoon of March 7, leaders of Hoang Mai town inspected the situation and discussed solutions for this crop.

Hoang Mai Town Party Secretary Vo Van Dung, leaders of the town People's Committee, the Economic Department and the District Agricultural Extension Station inspected the consumption of chayote as well as some vegetable products in Quynh Lien commune.

Chayote is a high-yielding fruit, 10-12 tons/sao, with a harvest time of 5 months. At the beginning of the season, chayote is priced at 5,000-6,000 VND/kg, but every year, during the main season, which is about 20 days before and after Tet, the price of chayote drops to its lowest level. This year, the lowest price is 300-500 VND/kg, so people do not harvest because they cannot cover the cost, and have to let the chayote fall all over the garden. However, until today (March 7), market demand has begun to show signs of increasing, chayote has been sold at 2,500 VND/kg; ensuring a profit for growers, however, the fruit yield is not much left.

The delegation also inspected the pilot model of growing Japanese spinach. This is a vegetable variety with high yield and value, and is being widely replicated by the Commune Women's Union.

After the inspection, Hoang Mai Town Party Secretary Vo Van Dung assigned the Town People's Committee to direct the Economic Department, Agricultural Extension Station and local leaders to pay attention to and grasp the production situation of the people, actively promote chayote products to consumers, expand the consumption market, especially for export. In particular, it is necessary to have research solutions to process chayote into dried products during the main season, when market demand is low. At the same time, it is necessary to strictly follow the certified VietGAP production process, maintaining the reputation and brand of the product.
