Recently, the Department of Trauma & Neurosurgery in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesia and Surgery, Vinh City General Hospital (DKTP) successfully performed a difficult surgery - removing a skull tumor in a difficult location for a 27-year-old man.

Boy with dangerous brain tumor

Mr. PCT (Hung Nguyen, Nghe An) was hospitalized with a prolonged painful swelling on his forehead, making daily activities difficult. Not only was he worried about the "strange" disease, but the deformed head also made him lose confidence, significantly affecting his life.

After the doctors thoroughly examined and performed specialized paraclinical tests, the CT scan revealed that the patient had a 3x2 cm skull tumor located right on the sagittal sinus - an extremely dangerous location. This is an area where even a small mistake during surgery can lead to damage to the sagittal sinus, causing severe bleeding, even life-threatening.

Dr. Tran Van Tu - Department of Trauma & Neurosurgerydirectly performed surgery on the patient, shared: “After receiving the complicated case, the team of doctors from the Department of Trauma & Neurosurgery consulted and meticulously planned the intervention, calculating each step to ensure maximum safety. The patient had a skin incision along the forehead on both sides to ensure aesthetics, then exposed the skull, removed the 5x5 cm KT skull bone around the tumor.

When approaching the dura, the surgeon carefully stops bleeding in the sinus area, sutures the dura, scrapes away the invasive tumor, and takes samples for pathological anatomy. Finally, a drain is placed and the surgical wound is sutured.

Major Advances in Neurosurgery

The success of the surgery not only brought the patient a chance to recover, but also marked a milestone affirming the expertise and ability to handle complex brain diseases; an important step forward in the field of neurosurgery of Vinh City General Hospital.

Craniofacial surgeries here have become routine, with many complex cases successfully treated; providing the opportunity to detect and intervene early, helping patients live healthier lives.

The successful implementation of many difficult techniques that were only performed at the provincial and central levels, therefore, in order to master advanced techniques, in recent times, Vinh City General Hospital has focused on investing in a modern, synchronous equipment system, along with training a team of highly specialized and experienced doctors.

“The effort to affirm its position in the field of high-quality healthcare not only contributes to enhancing the hospital’s brand but above all helps local people reduce the burden of costs and contributes to reducing the load on upper-level hospitals. This is still one of the major goals that Vinh General Hospital will focus on developing in the coming time” – Dr. Nguyen Trong Hieu – Deputy Director of the Hospital affirmed.
