Since ancient times, people in Diem village have utilized bamboo, rattan, and reed materials to create daily necessities such as baskets, trays, and trays, not only for their families' needs but also for exchange and trade. However, there were times when the products they made could not be sold, and many people had to sadly give up their jobs and find other jobs. In 2016, Ms. Lang Thi Hoa, a devoted daughter of the village, collaborated with nearly 20 people and local authorities to establish the Diem Village Bamboo and Rattan Cooperative. This was an important turning point in helping the weaving profession of the people to be restored and strongly developed. To date, the cooperative has about 20 members, specializing in producing items such as bamboo trays, bamboo chairs, baskets, trays, etc. Not only serving the domestic market, these products are also exported to Germany, France, Japan, etc. Photo: Duc Anh

While working, she recalled: “In the past, everyone in the village knew how to weave, and materials were available just by going behind the mountain. But now, the biggest concern is that the young generation is no longer interested in the craft.” Currently, in the craft village, the number of people weaving is only about 20 people, mostly the elderly. However, the belief in the longevity of the bamboo and rattan weaving craft has never faded. “Preserving the craft is not only about preserving a livelihood, but also preserving the identity and soul of Diem village. If there is the cooperation of the community and the government, I believe that Diem bamboo and rattan weaving will continue to be strong, continuing to spread traditional values everywhere,” Ms. Hoa excitedly shared. However, the preservation and development of bamboo and rattan weaving still faces many challenges. Handicraft products require a lot of effort but the economic value is not really high, forcing many skilled people to switch to other jobs. In addition, the output for the products is still unstable, making it difficult to compete with mass-produced industrial products. Photo: Duc Anh

Concerned about the survival of the craft village, Ms. Hoa - Head of the Diem Bamboo and Rattan Cooperative has brought her products to major trade fairs from Nghe An to Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City. Photo: Duc Anh

Every year, in addition to the domestic market, Diem village also exports hundreds of products to foreign countries. Tables, chairs, and fruit trays made from bamboo, rattan, and cypress are popular with customers, providing a relatively stable source of income for the villagers. Photo: Duc Anh
