We visited the family of martyr Nguyen Cong Hao (Hamlet 1, Hoi Son Commune, Anh Son) on a hot sunny day. Martyr Nguyen Cong Hao’s mother, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kieu, lives alone in a small house that her family sold cows to build more than 6 years ago. When we came to learn about martyr Hao, the tears that had been held back for many years fell down her mother’s aged face.

Holding back her pain, my mother said: “I am old now, I don’t remember much since the day Hao sacrificed himself.” Although she said that, the images of her son more than 30 years ago still appear clearly in her mind. Recalling those days, my mother said: At that time, Nguyen Cong Hao had just entered 10th grade and was very intelligent and bright. When his friends couldn’t solve difficult math problems, they would come to him to ask him to help them. Teachers and friends all had hope and were happy for him. Not only that, with his strong body, he was always ready to help his neighbors when they needed him. “What I remember most is that he sang all the time. When he came home from work or school, he sang to make the whole family forget all their tiredness. He was that good,” Kieu’s mother added.

But suddenly, Mr. Hao joined the army to the northern border. His brother, Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoan, said that on that day, Mr. Hoan was the one who went to the military examination to join the army but was rejected because he was not healthy enough. Seeing his brother sad, Hao said: "I will go instead of you". True to his word, in August 1983, Nguyen Cong Hao joined the army.

After a while, in early 1986, Nguyen Cong Hao returned. He excitedly told everyone that his unit had sent him to report his achievements to all 6 northern provinces because of his glorious achievements.

That battle marked Nguyen Cong Hao as a hero on the Vi Xuyen front. His family said that right after reporting his achievements, his superiors sent him to study in Russia, but he said: "I fought in this battle and then it's not too late to go back to school." And then, in a battle in early May 1986, he was hit by artillery and fell off a cliff, and died at the age of 22.

Mr. Le Canh Ta (Hamlet 2, Lang Son Commune, Anh Son) is a comrade of martyr Nguyen Cong Hao. He recounted that before his death, martyr Hao was a hero: One day, Hao's team fought fiercely against the large number of Chinese troops who were pouring in to retake our high point.

The two sides fought continuously for a day and a half, his comrades were all sacrificed and wounded. Our reinforcements wanted to come to the rescue but it was extremely difficult because the enemy's firepower was very intense. He alone fired B40s and used AK guns to fight the enemy. Out of ammunition, he used his bayonet to fight hand-to-hand, killing many enemies. Standing alone on the high ground, fighting left and right, he made the enemy panic and fear. Only when our reinforcements arrived did they see Hao's face blackened, covered in blood, his clothes burned to pieces...

Holding the certificate of national merit of her son in her arms, mother Nguyen Thi Kieu sadly said: "He sacrificed without a single photo to worship, all documents were lost in the battle that year". The eyes of the mother who had been waiting for her son for more than 30 years at the northern border were red in the afternoon sun. But we understood that in those eyes there was still a shining pride because there was a heroic son who left his flesh and blood on the land of Ha Tuyen.
