Heavy rain floods hundreds of hectares of winter vegetables

(Baonghean.vn)- Heavy rain lasting from November 7 to November 8 caused hundreds of hectares of commercial vegetables of people in the coastal areas of Quynh Luu district to be flooded, causing tens of billions of dong in damage.

With 135 mm of rainfall recorded on the morning of November 8, this is considered the longest period of heavy rain since the beginning of the season. Heavy rain has flooded hundreds of hectares of winter vegetables, especially large-scale vegetable growing areas in coastal communes.

Although it was raining heavily, Mr. Ho Dinh Ngo in Hamlet 5, Quynh Luong Commune still went to the field to harvest young onions. The rain that lasted for a whole day caused his family's 6 sao of vegetables to be flooded and damaged. Mr. Ngo said that this was the heaviest rain since the beginning of the season. The previous rains also caused flooding and had been repaired and were ready for harvest, but this rain continued to cause heavy damage.

“My family just recovered from the rain about a month ago, then planted 6 sao including 2 sao of spring onions, 2 sao of tomatoes, and the rest of the vegetables. This heavy rain flooded the entire area, and if the spring onions are not harvested and sold well, they will all be damaged when the sun comes up,” said Mr. Ngo.

With 700 hectares specializing in growing vegetables concentrated in the communes of Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong, Quynh Bang, according to statistics, the prolonged heavy rain has flooded over 500 hectares of vegetables such as scallions, tomatoes, mustard greens... causing tens of billions of dong in damage. Of which, Quynh Minh 148 hectares, Quynh Luong 200 hectares, Quynh Bang 152 hectares...

In the face of heavy rain, in order to overcome the damage, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district is directing agricultural and irrigation staff in coastal communes to regularly update weather information, actively follow the fields to dredge canals, clear water flows to drain water in vegetable fields, and avoid local flooding. As for vegetable areas that can be harvested, people are directed to take advantage of the time to go to the fields to harvest quickly and neatly.

Quynh Luu district has nearly 1,200 hectares of aquaculture area. Heavy rains have flooded nearly 200 hectares of ponds and lakes in the communes of Quynh Van, Quynh Bang, Quynh Thach, Quynh Thanh, Quynh Hoa... causing the loss of hundreds of tons of fish.

* In Hoang Mai Town,The prolonged heavy rain combined with the release of floodwaters from Vuc Mau Lake has submerged the entire vegetable field of the farmers. In particular, the potatoes that the farmers had just planted were soaked in water, rotting, and there was a possibility of losing the entire crop.

Mai Hung Ward has 60 hectares of winter vegetables, mainly potatoes, cabbage, and sweet cabbage, of which potatoes are considered the main winter crop that brings high economic efficiency. This winter crop, Mai Hung Agricultural Service Cooperative and local people imported more than 17 tons of seed potatoes at a price of 20,000 VND/kg, and planted them on 20 hectares of flooded land.

In addition, more than 100 hectares of green onions, mustard greens, cabbage, and chayote of farmers in Quynh Lien commune were also severely flooded, causing root rot and leaf damage. The irrigation canal systems of Quynh Trang, Quynh Vinh, and Mai Hung communes were all submerged. The Hoang Mai River rose, and the pontoon bridge connecting Mai Hung ward to Quynh Vinh was closed to traffic to ensure people's safety.
