Russia mobilizes the ship Academician Chersky to install Nord Stream 2

Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the construction of Nord Stream 2, confirmed that the pipe-laying vessel Academician Chersky has arrived at the construction site for laying the gas pipeline in Danish waters.

"Nord Stream 2 AG announces that the vessel Academician Chersky has arrived at the construction site," the construction operator said in a comment.

Earlier, it was reported that the Academician Chersky ship, after a month of training off the coast of Kaliningrad, headed west - to the exclusive economic zone of Denmark to begin preparatory work before laying pipes.

The Russian ship Fortuna is currently under construction, laying the second branch of the gas pipeline (Line B) in Denmark. The ship Academician Chersky will continue work on laying the first branch of "Nord Stream 2" (Line A).

Nord Stream 2 is being built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea with the aim of ensuring a direct and reliable supply of gas to Europe. EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The US, the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine are against the project. The US imposed sanctions on the gas pipeline in December 2019, which forced the Swiss company Allseas to stop its operations.

Work resumed a year later in December 2020, with the Fortuna pipe-laying vessel laying 2.6 km of pipeline in German waters. As a result, according to Nord Stream 2 AG (the project operator), at the end of January there were still about 148 km of pipeline left to be completed out of a total length of 2,460 km, of which 120 km remained in Danish waters, and about 28 km in German waters.
