Russia's TASS news agency quoted a source from President Vladimir Putin's administration as saying that the Russian presidential election will not be postponed and will still be held as previously planned, in March 2018.

“Talking about an early election is nonsense, a conspiracy theory,” the source said, stressing that the election would only be postponed in case of “some unexpected events, when there is uncertainty about some issue.”

According to Russian regulations on presidential elections, the voting day is “the second Sunday of the month in which the previous general presidential election was held and the month in which the president was elected 6 years ago”.

In 2012, presidential elections were held on March 4.

On December 23, 2016, answering a Wall Street Journal reporter at the annual press conference about the possibility of holding early elections in Russia, President Vladimir Putin said: "It is possible, but not appropriate."

Discussions about changing the schedule of presidential elections in Russia began after the law on changing the time of State Duma elections was passed in the summer of 2015. Accordingly, the elections to the State Duma were rescheduled from December to September 2016.
