In an article for National Interest magazine, journalist Alex Civik outlined the reasons for Russia's policy shift to the East.

Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Journalist Alex Civik explains the current close relationship between Russia and China by the fact that, historically, Russia's turn to the East was a response to Western "betrayal" and "coercion."

For example, Civik said, the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky warned that during Russia's resurgence after its defeat in the Crimean War in the mid-19th century, the country would transition to "Asiatic Russia," since the Christian British Empire allied with the Ottoman Empire.

The journalist noted that in recent years, Moscow and Beijing have increased military cooperation, as well as interaction in the field of space exploration. He noted that President Vladimir Putin is using cooperation with China as a geopolitical and domestic protection against Western interference.

"As the administration of President Joe Biden tries to pursue a policy towards Russia consistent with the recent extension of the START III treaty, the desired goal remains the possibility of establishing mutually respectful relations between the two countries in the coming years," journalist Alex Civik noted.

The author of the article calls on US President Joe Biden to build equal bilateral relations with Russia at the diplomatic level. He also believes that the US leader should take a responsible approach to his policy in the Middle East.

Journalist Civik concluded that the US and its Western partners will have to solve the problem of how to attract Russia to cooperate with them, not push it towards further cooperation with China.
