Previously, at around 10:30 p.m. on May 18, 2016, local people discovered a female body at the edge of the forest on Pa Hang slope, Toong 2 village, Chau Phong commune, Nghe An, in the process of decomposition, so they reported the case to the authorities to handle the case.

After receiving the report, the Criminal Police Department coordinated with the Quy Chau District Police, the Provincial Police's Criminal Technique Department and the Provincial People's Procuracy to conduct a crime scene investigation and autopsy to investigate the cause.

At the scene, the investigation agency identified the victim as Vi Thi Thanh (born in 2003), residing in Toong 2 village, Chau Phong commune, Quy Chau, Nghe An). At the same time, the police agency also discovered a wallet containing a driver's license in the name of Ly Thanh Dat (born in 1997), residing in Na Cong village, Chau Hoan commune, Quy Chau, along with a number of related documents.

According to information from some people in Toong 2 village, Chau Phong commune, on May 11, Vi Thi Thanh went missing for unknown reasons. Before going missing, Thanh met a young man named Dat. On May 19, the authorities detained suspect Ly Thanh Dat to conduct an investigation related to the above unusual death.

During the investigation, Dat confessed that after eating and drinking at a relative's house in Ban Toong 2, Chau Phong commune, he met Thanh and took him to Thanh's acquaintance's house to play.

On the way back, the two got into a fight. Dat strangled Thanh, used a tree vine to wrap around her neck, and then had the intention of raping her. While raping her, Dat strangled her until she stopped moving. After that, Dat left the victim in the middle of the forest and went home. According to the police, Dat had a previous conviction for property destruction in 2014.
