(Baonghean.vn) - Suddenly experiencing severe abdominal pain in the middle of the night and being taken to the emergency room by his family, patient Trinh Manh Kha (78 years old) was diagnosed with a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, threatening rapid death.

At 3:00 a.m. on November 30, patient Trinh Manh Kha (residing in Huong Khe, Ha Tinh) had abdominal pain, the pain gradually increased, became more and more severe, made him dizzy, sweaty, and unable to stand. Receiving the patient in a serious condition, Ha Tinh General Hospital urgently transferred the patient directly to Nghe An General Hospital.

Upon admission, the patient was in a state of circulatory collapse, with pale mucous membranes and low blood pressure. After an emergency ultrasound at the bedside, the doctor discovered an image of an abdominal aortic aneurysm below the renal artery, extending down to the common iliac arteries on both sides. The aneurysm was 9.3 cm in size (5 times the size of a normal aorta), 15 cm long, with many blood clots sticking to the walls and filling the lumen, and a lot of fluid suspected to be bloody in the abdomen. Diagnosing that the abdominal aortic aneurysm had ruptured, with a risk of rapid death due to blood loss if not treated promptly, the hospital's Board of Directors decided to transfer the patient for emergency surgery.

"We controlled, clamped the upper and lower ends of the aneurysm to stop the bleeding, removed the aneurysm, and replaced the abdominal aorta - iliac artery on both sides with artificial blood vessels. All operations of the surgical team needed to be quick to restore the artery, and provide blood to the lower limbs to avoid necrosis," - Master Pham Van Chung, Department of Cardiovascular - Thoracic Surgery, the main surgeon of the surgery shared.

Doctor Chung also said that patient Kha was saved thanks to the effective coordination between 3 hospitals: Bach Mai Hospital, Nghe An General Hospital and Ha Tinh General Hospital. With a very urgent emergency like a ruptured artery, the patient had no chance of surviving the 350 km journey to the capital.

The post-operative resuscitation process in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for patients with ruptured aortic aneurysms is also extremely difficult and arduous. Due to excessive loss, patients are prone to blood clotting disorders, liver failure, and kidney failure. The risk of death is always present.

Up to now, after more than 10 days, the patient has regained consciousness, no fever, hemodynamics and blood and biochemical test indicators have stabilized, and his health is good./.
