Notably, children with encephalitis often have not been vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis or mumps. Most children admitted to the Infectious Diseases Department, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital were in serious condition. Some children had convulsions, impaired perception, and coma.

Mr. Hoang Trong Cuu (in Hung Long commune, Hung Nguyen district) whose son, Hoang Trong Hai Minh (7 years old), is being treated for encephalitis in the infectious diseases department, said: He got sick a week ago. At noon, seeing him having a fever and vomiting, the family went to buy medicine for him to take but it did not help.

Hai Minh's symptoms include a mild fever but severe headache and vomiting. He is especially afraid of sound and light. Hearing loud noises, he covers his ears because of the pain. When the lights are turned on, he covers his eyes with a pillow and blanket.

Dr. Nguyen Van Son, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said: Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain parenchyma, manifested by localized or diffuse neuropsychiatric dysfunction. The most common cause of encephalitis is viral infection. Many cases of the disease are not treated promptly or are severe, leading to complications such as limb weakness, hemiplegia, more severe disability, vegetative state, and even death.

Doctor Son recommends: The disease can be prevented by vaccinating children, vaccines are given at vaccination service facilities. In addition, everyone should gradually practice good personal hygiene: Regularly wash hands with soap, gargle with common nasal and throat antiseptic solutions; practice good hygiene in living places, ventilate living places and workplaces; When there are signs of high fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, go to a medical facility immediately for timely examination and treatment.

Signs of encephalitis include: prolonged high fever, severe headache, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, confusion, disorientation, personality changes, convulsions, hearing and speech disorders, hallucinations, memory loss, lethargy, coma, photophobia... In young children, the above signs are not typical and difficult to detect, however, there are still some important signs that help guide the diagnosis such as vomiting, enlarged fontanelle, crying that cannot be calmed or increased crying when the child is picked up or changed position, stiff body.
