Suspect committed suicide with a knife in detention camp

On May 4, Colonel Pham Van Ngan - Deputy Director of Vinh Long Provincial Police, confirmed that suspect Nguyen Huu Tan (38 years old, residing in Thanh Phuoc ward, Binh Minh town, Vinh Long) used a box cutter to commit suicide in Vinh Long Provincial Police Detention Center.

According to the police, on the evening of May 2, Tan was urgently arrested by the Security Investigation Agency to investigate the act of Disseminating documents against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, as stipulated in Article 88 of the Penal Code.

The next morning, the officer came in to take Tan's statement. At this time, the suspect asked the officer to get him some water to drink. Taking advantage of the moment the investigator left the room, Tan searched for the box cutter kept in the officer's personal briefcase and committed suicide.

According to Colonel Ngan, the entire process of Tan using a knife to commit suicide was recorded by a camera. The police showed Tan's family all the recorded camera data. Tan's family also witnessed the investigation at the scene.

“The false information that someone else influenced suspect Tan is completely untrue. Tan himself used a knife to commit suicide,” Colonel Ngan affirmed, adding that the police have handed over Tan’s body to his family for burial.

The Director of Vinh Long Provincial Police also directed the Investigation Police Agency to continue to clarify the case.
