Risk of suspension bridge collapse in Ky Son
(Baonghean.vn) - Continuous heavy rain and floods have caused the Xop Nhi suspension bridge in Huu Lap commune, Ky Son district (Nghe An) to increasingly crack and erode the bridge abutments. Currently, the locality has prevented heavy trucks from passing through to ensure safety.
Xop Nhi suspension bridge crosses Nam Mo river, is one of the important traffic points of Ky Son district, connecting from National Highway 7 to the northern communes of the district such as Huu Lap, Bao Nam, Pha Danh, Bao Thang... However, the bridge is currently in a dangerous state because the northern bridge abutment is seriously eroded.

According to observations, at the northern abutment of the Xop Nhi suspension bridge, blocks of rock and soil fell into the Nam Mo River, with a crack about 7 meters long, gouging deep into the frog's jaw. This crack is at risk of spreading when the river water rises.
Ms. Vi Thi Dan in Xop Nhi village, Huu Lap commune said: "Previously, this suspension bridge was quite sturdy, but after the flood came more than a month ago, the bridge pier gradually collapsed, many layers of soil and rocks were washed away. We, the people, are very worried when passing through here. Many cars also have to find other routes for fear of risks."

Faced with this situation, the local authorities have issued a notice prohibiting heavy trucks from crossing the bridge and erecting barriers to limit the height. Currently, only motorbikes and small cars are allowed to pass through.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hoang - Chairman of Ky Son District People's Committee said: Due to the impact of floods after storm No. 4, Xop Nhi suspension bridge over Nam Mo river has been eroded very dangerously, there is a risk of the bridge pier collapsing if there is heavy rain or floods in the near future.
