These days, as the people of the whole country joyfully look forward to the great national holidays, the descendants of the martyr and revolutionary soldier Nguyen Ngo Dat have an added reason for joy because a street in Vinh Tan ward, Vinh city, has been named after him.

In the ancestral temple of martyr Nguyen Ngo Dat in Hamlet 2, Chau Nhan Commune (Hung Nguyen District), the grandchildren and great-grandchildren have dedicated a room as a family tradition room, containing valuable documents and artifacts left by generations of their ancestors. Among these is the book "Nghe An – Examples of Communists," compiled by the Propaganda Department of the Nghe An Provincial Party Committee and published by the National Political Publishing House. This book contains articles about martyr Nguyen Ngo Dat and his two sons, Nguyen Xuan Thanh and Nguyen Van Chinh. The article about martyr Nguyen Ngo Dat is published in Volume 3, introducing the revolutionary life and sacrifice of this steadfast communist soldier.

Martyr Nguyen Ngo Dat (1890 - 1932) was a descendant of the Nguyen Duc family in Phuc My village, Van Vien commune, Hung Nguyen district (now Chau Nhan commune, Hung Nguyen district). He was born into a patriotic family; his father, Nguyen Duc Dieu, had close ties to the Van Than movement; his eldest brother also participated in this movement and was executed by the French at Hong Linh mountain (Ha Tinh). As a child, Nguyen Ngo Dat studied Chinese characters and passed the provincial examinations with top marks, earning him the nickname "Dat, the top scholar."

Born into a family and rural area rich in patriotic traditions, Nguyen Ngo Dat was early enlightened by revolutionary ideals. In 1927, he joined the Tan Viet Party and was tasked with building a base in the Phuc My area. To propagate revolutionary ideals and awaken the patriotism of the people, he opened a class to teach the Vietnamese language to the children in the village, and bought Vietnamese books and newspapers with progressive content to spread the revolutionary ideas of the time. After the Tan Viet Party disbanded, he joined the Indochinese Communist Party in 1930. During this time, he established a printing organization to print and distribute leaflets and copy revolutionary documents for dissemination in the branches. He successfully propagated and enlightened a number of outstanding individuals and went on to establish the first Party branch in Phuc My, with himself as Secretary, and organized the establishment of branches in Phu Vinh, Xuan Nha, and My Du. His family's private residence became a secret operational base for the Finance Department of the Central Committee of Vietnam and the printing team.

After operating for four months, the base was exposed, forcing Mr. Nguyen Ngo Dat and his eldest son, Nguyen Xuan Thanh, to flee and relocate to ensure secrecy and safety. Their family home was occupied by the French colonial army, who set up a military outpost. His wife and young children were evicted and had to seek refuge with relatives.

In early 1931, the French colonialists and their collaborators implemented a brutal policy of repression against the Nghe Tinh Soviet movement, causing the local struggle to subside somewhat. To stabilize the morale of the masses and rebuild the revolutionary base, in his capacity as Secretary of the Hung Nguyen District Party Committee, Mr. Nguyen Ngo Dat and his comrades in the District Party Committee consolidated the movement, organized training for Red Self-Defense teams to fight the enemy and protect the people. Thanks to this, the flame of the revolutionary struggle was maintained, waiting for a favorable opportunity to ignite and spread.

On the night of July 14, 1931, while returning from a revolutionary base, Mr. Nguyen Ngo Dat and his son were surrounded and captured by the enemy. However, they only managed to capture his son, Nguyen Xuan Thanh, and imprisoned him in cell number 6 of Vinh Prison. On August 3, 1931, Mr. Nguyen Ngo Dat was arrested in Ky Anh (Ha Tinh province) and imprisoned in cell number 2 of Vinh Prison, meaning both father and son were held in the same prison. Subsequently, Mr. Nguyen Ngo Dat was sentenced by the Southern Court of Nghe An province with three sentences (two death sentences and one life sentence). Finally, sentence number 108 was carried out, resulting in a life sentence of hard labor, and he was exiled to Lao Bao. On April 23, 1932, he was transferred to Buon Ma Thuot Prison (Dak Lak province). On September 28, 1932, he breathed his last at the age of 42, having dedicated his entire life to the revolutionary cause.

In December 1993, after more than 60 years, his descendants found his grave, and the family, in coordination with the Dak Lak Provincial Party Committee, built a place of worship in Tu An Ward, Buon Ma Thuot City.

In 2020, the extended family relocated the grave of martyr Nguyen Ngo Dat from Buon Ma Thuot city back to his hometown after 88 years of separation. His descendants are even more proud and joyful that the Nghe An Provincial People's Council has issued a resolution naming a street in Vinh city after him. This street is located a few hundred meters from the place where he was admitted to the Party and appointed Secretary of the Hung Nguyen District Party Committee. This is a recognition and honor of the contributions of a revolutionary soldier who sacrificed himself for the liberation of his homeland and country.
