Farmers in Con Cuong mountainous area grow gladiolus and dahlias to sell during Tet
(Baonghean.vn) - At this time, farmers in the mountainous district of Con Cuong are busy taking care of flowers and kumquats to sell in time for Tet. The types of flowers chosen by the people to grow are traditional flowers such as gladiolus, dahlias, cockscombs, kumquats...
These days, Mr. Ho Minh Dung, Lien Tan village, Bong Khe commune (Con Cuong) is taking care of gladiolus flowers so that they bloom in time for Tet in order to have a high harvest. His family grows 1 sao of gladiolus flowers, in all colors: bright red, yellow... He said that last Tet, gladiolus cost from 10-12 thousand VND/plant, after deducting expenses, the profit was more than 10 million VND, so there is also an extra Tet for his family. The happiest thing is that the people in the district have flowers to use, they do not have to buy flowers in Vinh like before.

According to Mr. Dung, this year, due to the warm weather, the flowers are at risk of blooming early. Although Tet is still nearly a month away, some trees have bloomed, while others have grown large panicles. Photo: Ba Hau |
Mr. Dung added: This year the weather is favorable, so although there is still nearly a month until Tet, many flowers have bloomed and the flower heads are large. Flower care seems simple, but to make the flowers bloom beautifully and on time for Tet, it is necessary to be meticulous in each step of care, grasping the changes in the weather to fertilize or restrain the blooming.
Meanwhile, Mr. Pham Hoang Tai, Quyet Tien village, Chi Khe commune (Con Cuong) chose to grow kumquat trees to sell during Tet. With an area of nearly 3 sao of garden land, he has developed the profession of growing kumquat trees with over 100 trees each year.
Mr. Tai said that, from his love and seeing the high demand, he planted kumquat trees for Tet to supply the area. At first, he failed, then he traveled all the way to Hung Yen to visit and learn from the experience to apply to his model and now it has been successful.

Compared to growing other crops, growing kumquat requires a lot of effort from planting the tree until it flowers, in order to produce many fruits and many shoots. The type of kumquat he grows always focuses on having both flowers and fruits, so it is still popular in the market.
Kumquat growers must take care of the plants every day, the last 3 months of the year are the hardest. In addition to manure, the main fertilizer for the plants is crushed soybeans soaked in water for 1 month and then watered, watering 3 times a month and stopping in the 10th lunar month. When the weather is cold and foggy, anti-frost chemicals must be sprayed promptly to preserve the fruit.
Mr. Tai shared: “Since the 11th lunar month, many kumquat players and some agencies in the district have come to the garden to order. Some large, beautiful trees are sold for 700,000 - 800,000 VND/tree, the lowest is 200,000 - 300,000 VND/tree. This year, my family has prepared over 100 trees to sell during Tet."
Besides households growing flowers and kumquat trees for sale, in Con Cuong before Tet, people also plant colorful flowers in front of their gardens with the wish for a warm and fresh year.
According to many flower growers in this mountainous district, seeds and bulbs are easy to grow and care for, so they are very popular with the people. With seeds costing from a few tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand dong, plus the cost of buying fertilizer, owning beautiful and unique flower beds to welcome Tet is not difficult. In addition, they also sell to passersby and to families in need. The types of flowers chosen to grow are dahlias, roses, chrysanthemums, cockscombs... which are very beautiful and have a Tet atmosphere.
