Farmers win big in the third crop of rice

(Baonghean.vn) - Taking advantage of the vacant land after the summer-autumn rice harvest, people in Hung Dao commune (Hung Nguyen) have joined hands to build embankments to raise fish for the third crop to increase their income. At this time, people are focusing on harvesting with an estimated output of over 50 tons of fish.

As the commune with the most movement in the district in raising fish in the third crop in rice fields, this is the 10th year that Hung Dao people continue to implement this model.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Dung, Hamlet 4B, excitedly said: “More than ten years ago, the land after the Summer-Autumn crop was often left empty, while farmers worked seasonally so they were often idle. Therefore, households built a freshwater fish farming model on rice fields. When harvesting, many people asked to buy, so from then on, we increased the area to both supply clean freshwater fish food to people and increase income.”

This type of "little fish" is popular with many people.

This year, the entire Hung Dao commune has 53 hectares of fish for the third crop, mainly concentrated in hamlets 4B, 6A, 7, 3. The average annual yield is 1.2 tons/ha. The total output of the commune this year is estimated at nearly 60 tons of fish.

People harvest fish in self-made ditches.

The fish released are popular freshwater fish such as grass carp, silver carp, and mullet. The release time is August and after 3 months, they can be harvested. The fish farming fields are located on Highway 46 - a place with a lot of people passing by, so they are very popular. Currently, the average price of these fish is from 55,000 - 60,000 VND/kg.

Each fish weighs from 1.5 - 3kg, priced from 90,000 - 180,000 VND/fish.

Mr. Phan Van Tan - Chairman of Hung Dao Commune People's Committee said: "This is a very creative way of doing business of the people. However, raising fish in the third crop on rice fields is greatly affected by the weather, so it needs careful care. In the coming years, if conditions are favorable, the commune will expand this method. After harvesting the third crop of fish, people must renovate the land to prepare for winter-spring rice production."
