Raising snakehead fish in Quynh Luu (Nghe An) earns hundreds of millions of dong
(Baonghean.vn) - 2019 was the first year that Mr. Bui Van Thoa's family in hamlet 11, Quynh Hung commune raised porcupine snout snakehead fish at high density and with good results.
According to Mr. Thoa, raising porcupine snout snakehead fish helps them gain weight quickly and is easy to raise, but to keep the fish healthy, with a balanced body and uniform size, a clean water source is very important.
Therefore, every 5-10 days, he changes the water and uses biological products to disinfect the pond. In addition, on hot days, he turns on the water circulation machine regularly to avoid water stratification and prevent the fish from getting burned and dying.

Mr. Thoa is also very careful in choosing the type of food that ensures protein, helps the fish grow quickly, and avoids cannibalism. Thanks to strict adherence to the procedures during the stocking process, up to now, his family's snakehead fish yield is estimated at nearly 30 tons. With 150,000 snakehead fish stocked on an area of 2,500 m2, the current selling price is 40-45 thousand VND/kg, after deducting costs, the profit is more than a hundred million VND.
With an area of 3,000 m2Traditional fish farming was not very effective, so Mr. Pham Van Phu in Hamlet 9, Quynh Hung Commune also researched and was supported financially by the District Agricultural Extension Station to switch to raising porcupine snout snakehead fish. To have a timely water supply to the pond, Mr. Phu spent 1,000 m2 to make a settling pond to store water. After treating the pond and coloring the water, he released 25,000 fry.
Mr. Pham Van Phu said: During the breeding process, he always checks the drains and pond banks to prevent leaks and ensures the water level reaches 1.5 m or more. When the fish are mature, he reduces the amount of food by 80-90%.
After heavy rains, Mr. Phu spreads lime into the pond and around the banks to kill pathogens that are harmful to livestock. At the same time, he actively runs the sprinkler and changes the water to keep the pond environment clean. Every day, he mixes Vitamin C and digestive enzymes into the fish food to increase the fish's resistance and prevent gill fungus, swelling, and intestinal diseases.
It is expected that in the next 10 days, after nearly 7 months of raising, Mr. Phu will sell all the snakehead fish, with an estimated output of 10 tons, total revenue of nearly 500 million VND. After deducting the cost of buying food and seeds, his family will make a profit of more than 100 million VND, 5-7 times higher than the income from grass carp, bighead carp, and tilapia.

Quynh Luu district is setting a goal of striving to make snakehead fish a new farming species, gradually replacing traditional freshwater fish, in order to increase the value per unit area. At the same time, creating concentrated farming areas to link agents to consume products in large quantities, serving the needs of the province and neighboring provinces, especially the Northern and Chinese markets.
Through the above model, Quynh Luu also completed the technical process of raising commercial snakehead fish with high economic efficiency locally, to then replicate on a large scale. At the same time, step by step perfecting the process from breeding to commercial farming associated with processing, consumption, building the snakehead fish value chain into a brand in Quynh Luu.
