In the past, the silkworm farming profession attracted many age groups to participate, but in recent years, as young people have gone to work as workers in companies and factories, only the elderly stay at home and stick with this traditional profession. Photo: Xuan Hoang.

Because the land in Nghia Dong commune is good for growing mulberry, on average each household raises 8-9 batches of silkworms each year, each batch lasting 25 days, earning 2-3 million VND/batch. Photo: Xuan Hoang

People in Nghia Dong commune said that silk reeling has many stages and is hard work. When the silkworms are making cocoons, the breeders must watch for mild sunlight so that the cocoons are dry and fragrant, so that when the silk is spun, the cocoons do not dissolve, and the silk threads are golden. Due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, the current price of cocoons this year ranges from 80 to 90 thousand VND/kg, down from 20 to 30 thousand VND/kg compared to previous years. According to Mr. Vo Duy Hien - Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Dong Commune, although the silkworm farming profession is always busy, it brings in higher income than the production of other crops. The biggest difficulty is that the labor force in this profession is mainly elderly people, so it is difficult to expand the area and scale. Photo: Quang An
