US officials surprised by welcome in Ho Chi Minh City

The US Deputy National Security Advisor, who accompanied President Barack Obama on his visit to Vietnam, said they will never forget the welcome they received in Ho Chi Minh City.

"We will never forget the welcome in Ho Chi Minh City," Ben Rhodes, US Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications, wrote on his personal Twitter with the hashtag #ObamainVietnam.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz retweeted Rhodes' sentiments, commenting, "Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets to welcome @potus" and "I've never seen anything like this in my five years at the White House."

US President Barack Obama left Hanoi for Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of May 24, continuing his official visit to Vietnam. Thousands of people carrying flags and banners lined both sides of the road from Tan Son Nhat Airport to downtown Ho Chi Minh City to wait for President Obama.

US President Obama spent time visiting Ngoc Hoang Pagoda, a 100-year-old pagoda known to many locals and international tourists. He then met with the Vietnamese startup community at Dreamplex creative space, Miss Ao Dai building, Ben Nghe ward, District 1.

US President Obama is on an official visit to Vietnam for three days from May 23 to 25. On the first day, he met with President Tran Dai Quang, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and paid a courtesy call to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. He announced the US decision to completely lift the arms embargo on Vietnam and focused on discussing issues to strengthen partnership in many areas as well as regional and world issues.
