This year, many households in Phu Trach village, Me So commune (Van Giang district) have also painstakingly created kumquat trees with a rather unique gourd shape.
According to Mr. Nam, the owner of a gourd kumquat garden in Me So commune, gourd kumquats are only about 30-70cm tall. To create a gourd like the picture, the kumquats must be tied with strings when they are still young.
"The process of caring for and shaping the gourd kumquat is not the same as that of normal trees. Growers must know the right time to tie the fruit. When tying the kumquat, only do it when the fruit is dry so that the string can be fixed on the fruit and not slip. In addition, growers need to do it gently but tightly, avoiding scratching the skin which can damage the fruit. Normally, gourd kumquats take 2 years of care before they can be harvested, doing so will prevent the fruit from falling off early."
Mr. Long, the owner of a bonsai shop, said that the kumquat tree is one of the best-selling bonsai trees.
Many kumquat garden owners said that traders have already reserved deposits to buy the entire garden to resell to consumers during the Lunar New Year. The price of kumquat trees in the garden ranges from 100,000 to 1 million VND/pot, depending on the tree. However, this is the wholesale price for traders.
Ms. Huong (Cau Giay, Hanoi) shared that kumquat trees are considered a symbol of prosperity, promising a new year of good harvest for the homeowner. Therefore, this year, her family decided to buy a tree to display during Tet.
"While choosing a tree, I saw a strange-looking gourd kumquat tree with a fairly cheap price of only 180,000 VND/pot of pig carrying a tree, so I bought it to decorate the living room. The tree was introduced by the seller as being of domestic origin,...".
It is known that the gourd kumquat tree appeared in early 2018 by the people of Phu Trach village - Me So commune - Van Giang district - Hung Yen province. In the first year, because of market research, the tree was not widely known. By the beginning of January 2019, the image of the tree was posted on social networking markets by some people who specialized in selling Tet goods, so many consumers knew about it and sought to buy it.
