Quynh Luu: People cut down coastal protective casuarina forests for firewood

(Baonghean.vn) - Casuarina trees are considered a “shield” against high tides and landslides in coastal areas. However, some areas of the coastal protection casuarina forest in Quynh Bang commune, Quynh Luu district (Nghe An) are being cut down for firewood.

On the afternoon of March 12, we were present at Tan Hai hamlet, Quynh Bang commune (Quynh Luu) and saw that the felling of casuarina trees was still going on busily over an area of ​​thousands of square meters. A series of tall casuarina trees were sawn into pieces and transported by people to be used as firewood.

According to some local residents, the casuarina forests in Quynh Bang are all over 20 years old. In addition to protecting coastal residents during storms and high tides, casuarina forests also contribute to soil improvement and the fight against desertification.

When discussing the issue of cutting down coastal protective casuarina forests, Mr. Ho Dinh Quynh - Secretary of the Quynh Bang Commune Party Committee said: We do not have any information yet, the commune will send people to check. Currently, the whole commune still has about 10 hectares of casuarina forests, mainly assigned to groups of households for management.
