(Baonghean.vn) - Addicted to drugs, when someone asked him to find a source of goods, Vi Van Dien (residing in Que Phong district, Nghe An) immediately accepted. While trading drugs at his younger brother's house, Dien was discovered and arrested by the police.

On July 23, the Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of Vi Van Dien (born in 1975), residing in Chau Kim commune, Que Phong, for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking". In relation to this case, Dien's younger brother, Vi Van Hien (born in 1983), was prosecuted for the crime of "Concealing criminals".

Vi Van Dien is a drug addict. In 2002, Dien was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the People’s Court of Nghe An province for “Illegal transportation of narcotics”. In 2013, Dien had his sentence reduced and was released from prison early.

After being released from prison, Dien relapsed and often went to the forest behind the Nine-Chamber Temple to buy drugs. While buying drugs there, Dien got to know a Laotian man (unknown background and address). The Laotian told Dien that if he knew anyone who needed to buy drugs, he should tell him. Dien agreed.

On the afternoon of February 6, 2018, a young man came to Dien's house to order 3 heroin cakes. Dien informed the Laotian. On February 8, the Laotian gave Dien 3 heroin cakes, priced at 110 million VND/cake, and payment would be made later when the goods were sold.

On February 9, Dien and the other young man were present at Vi Van Hien's house (Dien's younger brother, who lives next door) to exchange drugs. The two sides agreed on a price of 135 million VND/cake. Vi Van Hien heard and knew about the exchange. While the transaction was taking place, the police raided. The strange young man escaped, Dien threw away the drugs and ran away but was caught by the detectives. Hearing the noise in the yard, Vi Van Hien ran out, saw his brother being restrained by the police, Hien ran back to pick up the bag of drugs and threw it behind the house.

At the trial, both defendants confessed their crimes. Considering the case as a whole, the panel sentenced Vi Van Dien to life in prison for “Illegal drug trafficking”. For “Concealing a criminal”, Vi Van Hien was sentenced to 15 months in prison but given a suspended sentence.
