In 2018, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Lieu, 65 years old, and his wife in My Son hamlet (Thanh My commune) started to renovate their mixed garden. Accordingly, on an area of nearly 1,000 square meters, he planned into plots with suitable crops: 1 plot for growing vegetables and spices; 1 plot for growing medicinal herbs; planted 60 grapefruit trees, 20 custard apple trees, along the edge of the fence planted jackfruit, avocado, dragon fruit and in a corner of the garden he dug a small pond, both to raise catfish and to get water to irrigate the garden. Along the entrance, he made an arched gate, built a trellis for climbing vines and grapes.

Many localities, due to insufficient garden area, have taken the initiative to collect ineffective rice fields to build model gardens with commercial crops such as squash, pumpkin, corn, melon, peanuts, beans... interspersed with perennial fruit trees. Photo: Thanh Phuc |
Mr. Lieu said: “Both of us are old, we no longer have the strength to plow the fields, so we only invest in taking care of the vegetable garden, fish pond, and chickens. After 3 years of renovating the garden, in addition to the vegetables that bring in a daily income of 70,000-100,000 VND, the fruit trees have also begun to yield. It is estimated that in the 4th year, when the fruit garden gives its first crop, the income from the garden will reach about 50-70 million VND/year. Gardening not only provides us with money to spend but also makes us enjoy our old age, working instead of exercising.”
In Hanh Lam (Thanh Chuong), previously, vast hilly gardens were left uncultivated or mixed with all kinds of trees such as areca, coconut, longan, mango... growing naturally, without care, and with no economic value. From 2018 to now, the movement has been implemented.renovate mixed gardens, build standard gardens,The hill gardens have "changed their skin", creating rich fruit gardens, bringing in hundreds of millions of dong in income per year.

Accordingly, 15 households will be selected to develop garden economy, taking grapefruit as the main crop, growing according to VietGAP, registering for traceability, with stamps, labels, geographical indications... From there, creating a commercial grapefruit growing area with stable output.

“In the near future, in each residential area and each hamlet, 10-15 households with large enough garden areas will be selected to plan suitable plants and animals; groups will be established to build family gardens, groups with the same interest in gardening, creating connections from seed selection, care to consumption. From there, we will create commodity areas with key local crops and livestock, develop local specialty products, and find stable outlets for family garden products.”
