In low-lying areas such as Long Thanh commune, after the summer-autumn rice harvest, agricultural by-products such as straw are collected by people to produce winter mushrooms. Entering this year's mushroom season, over 60 tons of raw materials from straw and sawdust have been collected by people to produce oyster mushrooms, button mushrooms, wood ear mushrooms, etc.

In addition to being supported 100% of the seed price, people are also trained in biological mushroom growing techniques and a number of other support mechanisms from the district.

According to the people, each ton of raw materials will produce 230-250 kg of fresh mushroom products. If the market price is 30,000 VND/kg, oyster mushrooms will bring in higher income than traditional crops.

As for Mr. Phan Van Linh in Hamlet 5 - Yen Thanh town, he has been involved in mushroom growing for nearly 6 years. This winter crop, his family's mushroom growing facility produced over 30,000 bags of mushroom spawn. In addition to producing mushroom seeds to meet the needs of people in and outside the district, this crop is expected to yield about 6 tons of fresh mushrooms of all kinds.

According to Mr. Linh, mushrooms can be grown all year round, the investment capital is not much, the production materials are available locally, and the products are suitable for the consumption market. However, mushroom growers must have a certain knowledge and invest time to take care of the mushrooms according to the correct technical process to ensure high economic efficiency.

Especially at the end of the year, mushroom products are very easy to consume. In addition to supplying to traders at wholesale markets in the area, currently at this facility, many large restaurants and supermarkets in Vinh City have signed contracts to supply clean mushrooms in a long-term and sustainable manner.

Currently, the whole district has 12 communes developing mushroom growing, of which 7 farms have been built with hundreds of households participating in large-scale production. Especially in the communes of Nam Thanh, Long Thanh, Hop Thanh, Son Thanh, Xuan Thanh... mushroom growing is developing strongly.

According to calculations by mushroom growers, on average each ton of raw materials put into production will earn 5-6 million VND. If the post-harvest agricultural by-products are fully utilized, farmers in the whole district will create a large quantity of goods for mushroom products.

This winter crop, the entire Yen Thanh district strives to produce 500 tons of fresh mushrooms to supply the market in the last months of the year and during the Lunar New Year. In order for the mushroom growing industry to develop effectively and sustainably, Yen Thanh district is gradually building an organized mushroom growing industry, promoting the midwifery role of cooperatives in production, aiming to provide stable products to the market.
