Prime Minister: Efforts needed to support farmers in many aspects

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc stated that Vietnamese farmers are always the pillar in the country's socio-economic development.

On the evening of October 14, in Hanoi, the Ceremony to Honor and Award the Title of Outstanding Vietnamese Farmers for 30 Years of Renovation took place. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended, presented the award and delivered a speech at the ceremony.

Also attending the ceremony were Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Tran Thanh Man, leaders of ministries, branches and localities; Farmers' Associations of provinces and cities, and 87 outstanding Vietnamese Farmers representing farmers nationwide who were honored and awarded this title.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister emphasized that farmers provide the main labor force for industrialization and modernization, making a direct and decisive contribution to the great achievements of the agricultural sector.

Including turning Vietnam from a food importer into one of the world's leading rice exporters and many other agricultural products.

Welcoming and appreciating the Vietnam Farmers' Association in coordination with relevant agencies to organize this program, the Prime Minister expressed his impression of the achievements that Vietnamese farmers have achieved: "This is a very meaningful event to honor and encourage outstanding farmers in the period of innovation and integration; with many achievements in labor production; dynamic, creative, daring to think, daring to do, determined to overcome difficulties, to legitimately enrich their families and society. Sharing and helping everyone to escape poverty and become well-off, rich, contributing to promoting agriculture and building new rural areas. I am very impressed with over 3.5 million good farming households, ensuring more than 3.5 million regular jobs and more than 7 million seasonal jobs every year, helping more than 300,000 households escape poverty".

Mr. Doan Phuong Tung (Giong Trom, Ben Tre) was voted by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union as "Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer" in 2017.

Appreciating the examples of creative farmers who are passionate about research, innovation, invention, and have many practical and effective scientific and technological works to apply in production, contributing to improving labor productivity, the Prime Minister warmly congratulated the 87 outstanding farmers honored at the ceremony.

These are dynamic people, daring to think and act, with many contributions to improving the manufacturing of agricultural machinery, applying scientific and technological advances, innovating the organization of production and processing links; building agricultural product brands, linking production and business with food safety. These beautiful flowers have added to the tradition of hard work, creativity, bravery and resilience of our people in general and our farmers in particular.

Entering the new phase, the Prime Minister said that the key task is to restructure agriculture towards large-scale commodity production, high technology, sustainable development, better meeting the needs of the domestic market and boosting exports... Along with that, focusing on effectively implementing the new rural construction program, striving for the growth rate of the entire agricultural sector to reach at least 3%/year by 2020; the income of rural residents to increase at least 1.8 times compared to 2015; 50% of communes to meet new rural standards.

To achieve these heavy targets, the Prime Minister requested that sectors at all levels and the Vietnam Farmers’ Union focus on synchronously and effectively implementing tasks and solutions to restructure the agricultural sector in association with new rural construction. Continue to review and perfect mechanisms and policies to support farmers and households in innovating forms of production organization and development; improve the operational efficiency of cooperatives and cooperative unions.

The Prime Minister also requested ministries, sectors and localities, according to their assigned functions and tasks, to continue to effectively implement the Project on restructuring the agricultural sector towards linking value chains to increase added value and sustainable development. Effectively implement the science and technology program serving rural development in the period 2016-2020. Regarding the Vietnam Farmers' Association, the Prime Minister said that efforts should be made to support farmers in many aspects.

"The Association needs to have practical and effective support solutions to help farmers strengthen their connections and reorganize production in the direction of shifting strongly to large-scale commodity production, from small-scale household economy to cooperative linkages and join enterprises in production and business.

"From traditional production and experience to high technology, from focusing on productivity and output to ensuring quality and high added value, meeting market requirements; replicating advanced examples, good models, and good practices; strengthening information and propaganda about good farmers; encouraging the strong development of businesses operating in rural areas," the Prime Minister emphasized.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister also respectfully requested the 87 outstanding examples honored to promote their role as advanced models, continue to contribute their strength and intelligence, have new and more creative ways of doing things, inspire and help farmers in the community develop production and business, strive to become rich legitimately, demonstrating the spirit of mutual love and mutual assistance of our nation and following the teachings of beloved President Ho Chi Minh: "how to make sure the poor have enough to eat; those who have enough to eat are well-off and rich; those who are well-off and rich are richer".
