Hungarian Prime Minister declares state of emergency due to war in Ukraine
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared a state of emergency in the country on the night of May 24 due to the war in Ukraine.
RT news agency said the above move by Hungarian Prime Minister Orban was made just hours after the country's parliament passed a package of measures allowing the Budapest government to respond to crisis situations.
“The state of emergency in Hungary will come into effect from midnight on May 24, and measures will be announced the following day. To protect Hungary’s national security interests, to ensure that we stay away from hostilities and protect Hungarian families, the government needs coordination and the ability to act immediately,” Mr. Orban said.
According to RT, the National AssemblyHungarypreviously approved a constitutional amendment to give the country's prime minister the power to declare a state of emergency if there is hostilities or a humanitarian disaster in a neighboring country.
Immediately after Prime Minister Orban announced the nationwide state of emergency, some opposition politicians criticized him on the grounds that "this will allow Mr. Orban to 'rule by decree', as well as bypass many lawmakers."
