Mr. Luc shared: To grow commercial oranges with income, it requires a large investment and it takes 4 years to harvest. Recently, the information that Minh Thanh oranges were granted additional geographical indication registration certificates for Vinh oranges by the State is a great joy for Mr. Luc's family and orange growers in the commune. This is an opportunity for Minh Thanh oranges to affirm their brand, increase product value, and create favorable conditions for people to invest in commercial orange growing.

Mr. Tran Khanh Tung - Chairman of Minh Thanh Commune People's Committee said: Since 2017, the province has had a policy of labeling Vinh oranges for origin tracing, but good quality orange products such as Minh Thanh oranges are not labeled because they are not in the Vinh orange geographical indication area. That is a disadvantage for orange growers here. This year, Minh Thanh commune is one of 5 communes in Yen Thanh district that has been granted additional certificates of registration of Vinh orange geographical indication by the Intellectual Property Office, which is a good sign for the locality.

Thus, households with conditions to grow oranges according to safe processes, VietGAP have been registered to affix the traceability stamp of Vinh oranges to increase their value. Favored by nature, fertile and loose soil is a favorable condition for orange trees to grow, currently in Minh Thanh commune, there are over 200 households investing in growing oranges, with an area of ​​over 30 hectares. Oranges are a traditional crop of local people, households not only have experience in planting and caring for orange trees to achieve high economic efficiency but also create a stable consumption market.

Dong Thanh commune has been famous for its Xa Doai oranges for more than 10 years, as there are several large orange farms in the commune.

In fact, Dong Thanh oranges have been chosen by customers for many years because of their guaranteed quality, beautiful fruit, and always high price. When the State grants a certificate of registration of geographical indications for Vinh oranges, it will create long-term convenience, because orange products here will have a traceability stamp of Vinh oranges, consumers can rest assured when choosing to buy the product.

Expand the area

The certificate of registration of geographical indications for crop products is a set of criteria that are specific and different from other growing areas. In particular, the specific characteristics of geographical conditions, growing areas (soil, climate, hydrology) and technical production conditions (varieties, breeding methods, planting methods, care techniques, harvesting and preservation) are guaranteed. The above conditions are the result of scientific research and comparison with some other growing areas. Therefore, when the geographical indication of Vinh oranges is expanded on Yen Thanh land, it is a testament to the quality of oranges here.

After Yen Thanh had 5 communes certified by the Intellectual Property Office to register the geographical indication of Vinh orange in mid-October 2019, including: Minh Thanh, Trung Thanh, Nam Thanh, Dong Thanh and Xuan Thanh, the district has a plan to propagate and disseminate so that organizations, individuals, especially farmers, follow the prescribed criteria when wanting to use the geographical indication label.

Yen Thanh is one of the localities that grow a lot of oranges, with nearly 300 hectares currently, mainly Xa Doai oranges with yellow hearts and has affirmed its "brand" for many years. Every year, the area of ​​Yen Thanh oranges increases, especially in the hillside and foothill areas. Growing oranges on average brings in an income of 300 - 400 million VND/ha/year.

A representative of the district’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that Yen Thanh’s orange growing area can develop about 1,000 hectares of hillside land. Therefore, when the Vinh orange geographical indication is certified, the district will gradually expand the area of ​​commercial oranges, especially the opportunity for people to invest in growing oranges according to safe processes, affirming the real value of Yen Thanh oranges.
