Nghe An's largest hydropower plant increases flood discharge, warns of downstream flooding
(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of August 30, the Flood and Storm Prevention and Search and Rescue Command of Nghe An province announced that it had issued a notice to agencies and units to develop a plan to ensure safety downstream when Ban Ve Hydropower Plant operates to discharge floodwaters.
According to the North Central Hydrometeorological Station, the water level at Nam Dan Hydrometeorological Station at 4:00 a.m. on August 30, 2018 was 3.35 m (below alarm level I: 2.05 m); Water flow to Ban Ve Lake at 7:00 a.m. on August 30, 2018 was 2,000 m3/s; water level of Ban Ve Lake at 7:00 a.m. on August 30, 2018 was 199.76 m.
Currently, the lake is discharging through the generator and overflowing with a flow of 2104 m3/s. Forecast, in the next 24-48 hours, the average flow to the largest lake is likely to be at: 2,000 to 2,300m3/s. To ensure safety for the project, Ban Ve hydroelectric reservoir will increase discharge flow from 2,000 to 2,500m3/S.
Previously, on August 18, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Nghe An province issued an order to operate the Ban Ve hydropower reservoir to reduce flooding downstream and ensure safety for the project.

In response to the increase in discharge flow of Ban Ve Hydropower Plant, to proactively respond and limit damage during flood reduction operations for downstream areas, ensuring safety for the project, on the morning of August 30, Comrade Dinh Viet Hong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, had a meeting with the Provincial Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control.
Comrade Dinh Viet Hong requested the People's Committees of Tuong Duong, Con Cuong, Anh Son, Do Luong, Thanh Chuong, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen, Nghi Loc districts and Vinh City; Heads of provincial Departments, Boards, Branches, Directors of Irrigation LLCs and related units to notify authorities at all levels, people, organizations operating on rivers and along rivers; Aquaculture facilities on rivers, water transport vehicles; Ferry terminals; Production and business activities, sand and gravel exploitation to know information about flood discharge from hydroelectric reservoirs to proactively take preventive measures to ensure safety of people and property.
Localities are required to review flood prevention plans to ensure safety for downstream areas, especially the dike system and residential areas on river banks to be ready to respond.
