Court apologizes to young man wrongly imprisoned for more than 800 days
The People's Court of Ca Mau City held a public apology to Mr. Nguyen Anh Duy, who was wrongly convicted of "Intentionally causing injury" and had to serve more than 800 days in prison.
On March 2, at the headquarters of the People's Committee of Hung My commune (Cai Nuoc district, Ca Mau), the People's Court of Ca Mau City publicly apologized to Mr. Nguyen Anh Duy (27 years old), for being wrongly convicted of "Intentionally causing injury".
The public apology was held at Mr. Duy's residence, witnessed by local authorities and people.

Deputy Chief Justice of Ca Mau City People's Court Pham Viet Trung, on behalf of the city's prosecution agency, apologized to Mr. Duy, his family and the people.
Mr. Trung admitted that the damage caused to Mr. Duy is irreparable, and that the prosecution agencies have investigated, prosecuted and wrongly tried Mr. Duy.
After this public apology, Ca Mau City People's Court will publish an apology, correction and negotiate compensation for damages according to the law for Mr. Duy.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Duy accepted the apology and shared, "Now I just want peace to stabilize my life."
According to records, Mr. Duy is one of five people prosecuted by Ca Mau City Police in a slashing and injuring case that occurred more than eight years ago.
Late on March 14, 2015, Dang Huu Thoi (living in Ca Mau) and his friend were walking on the street when a group of about 7-8 young men chased and slashed them. The friend escaped and was not injured, but Thoi was slashed on the head and shoulder.
When they realized they had slashed the wrong person, the group of young men left. Thoi then went home to get a machete and asked his friends to find the person who had slashed him to get revenge.
Early the next morning, Thoi’s group slashed Nguyen Quoc Toan, Ho Minh Tien, and Le Hoang Khen, causing injuries. After realizing they had slashed the wrong person, Thoi told everyone to leave the scene…
The police have arrested Duy, Thoi and related people in turn.
On July 14, 2016, Ca Mau City People's Court sentenced 5 defendants for "Intentionally causing injury", in which Mr. Duy was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
In November 2016, the People's Court of Ca Mau province held an appeal trial and annulled the entire first instance judgment due to many serious procedural violations.
On August 1, 2019, the People's Procuracy of Ca Mau City issued a decision to suspend the case against Mr. Duy. At the end of November 2019, Mr. Duy submitted a request to the People's Court of Ca Mau City to restore his honor and compensate him with more than 1 billion VND, as well as to organize an apology at his place of residence.
After 3 negotiations, Ca Mau City People's Court only agreed to pay 443 million VND in compensation. Disagreeing, Mr. Duy filed a lawsuit.
At the first instance and appeal court of the case of "dispute over compensation for damages due to wrongful conviction", the court ordered the People's Court of Ca Mau City to compensate Mr. Duy more than 500 million VND and to organize a public apology.
