At the meeting, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong welcomed and highly appreciated President Donald Trump's visit to Vietnam, saying that the visit was of great significance, contributing positively to promoting the Vietnam-US bilateral relationship and to the success of the 2017 APEC Summit hosted by Vietnam.
President Donald Trump expressed his honor and pleasure to meet General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, sincerely thanked the Vietnamese leaders and people for their warm welcome and sympathy, congratulated Vietnam on successfully hosting the APEC Summit in a "wonderful" manner, expressed his deep impression of the country, people and achievements of Vietnam; and said that the United States and Vietnam have many common interests to strengthen cooperation in the coming time.

President Donald Trump informed General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong of the results of his talks and discussions with President Tran Dai Quang, saying that Vietnam's trade surplus with the United States is evidence that Vietnam has been more effective in bilateral cooperation in recent times; expressing his wish that Vietnam increase imports of products in which the United States has advantages and potential to move towards a more balanced trade, while promoting cooperation in other areas in the coming time.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong thanked President Donald Trump for his good feelings towards Vietnam and for sharing with the people of the Central region who are suffering from the consequences of storms and floods.
The General Secretary positively assessed the development of Vietnam-US bilateral relations since the normalization of relations; he said that the two countries still have much potential and space to expand cooperation.
The General Secretary suggested that the two sides, along with focusing on further improving the effectiveness of economic and trade cooperation, should continue to strengthen political trust, high-level exchanges and contacts, promote cooperation in education, human resources development, science and technology, and coordinate at multilateral forums, etc.; expressing his belief that the Vietnam-US relationship will continue to develop well in the coming time for the benefit of the people of the two countries, the region and the world.
