Sentencing of online gambling ring: Confiscation of 8 billion VND to state budget

After 3 days of trial and deliberation, on the afternoon of November 13, the first instance trial of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court on the "Organizing Gambling" and "Gambling" ring via the M88 website announced the verdict.

According to the verdict, between April 2013 and September 2014, Tran Hau Chi (born in 1960, currently on the run) and 11 other people opened 22 bank accounts as representative accounts for M88 to receive money from gamblers.

Of the 22 accounts that the 11 subjects organized and opened, 15 were used to transfer 644 billion VND. Gamblers who wanted to play had to create a member account at M88 and deposit money by transferring money to M88's account.

The defendants listened to the verdict on the afternoon of November 13.

The verdict sentenced 11 defendants for the crime of "Organizing gambling" including: Tran Quoc Khoi, Tran Bui Minh Tuan, Dip Mot Sang, Nguyen Cam Mung, Nguyen Thi Thu, Nguyen Thuy Trang, Le Bao Duy, Tran Long Thanh, Phan Minh Truong, Tran Trung Hieu, Do Minh Tuan and 33 defendants for the crime of "Gambling" including many engineers, doctors, civil servants... each defendant received the lowest sentence of 5 months and 26 days in prison, the highest sentence of 9 years in prison (including suspended sentence, imprisonment).

The verdict also ordered the confiscation of a total of VND8 billion from state funds. Some equipment used as evidence in the case, such as computers and phones, was also confiscated./.
