Fingerprints could be used to replace boarding passes

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration is trying to reduce airport wait times by implementing new fingerprint technology.

The new fingerprint technology will be tested for the first time at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Denver International Airport, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced.

TSA hasn’t given an exact start date, but fingerprint checks for both boarding passes and ID cards will be conducted at security checkpoints for four weeks starting around mid-June. The use of fingerprint scanners is entirely voluntary, and TSA will rely on fingerprints that have been provided by customers in advance — meaning only travelers who have signed up will be able to participate in the program.

In short, fingerprint technology helps reduce the confusion around paperwork. You simply place your finger on the scanner and it matches your fingerprint information to your boarding pass and identification card. Fingerprint technology and other technologies are being tested at a number of airports in the United States and abroad that are looking to modernize airport security.

Last month, JetBlue announced it was testing biometric facial recognition at its gates in Boston. Amsterdam and London have also tested facial recognition, but no time frame has been set for when it will be rolled out to any airports or airlines. Aviation security seems to be moving quickly into the 21st century.
