Fun 'cow beauty pageant' in border commune

Hanh Lam is a border commune with potential and tradition of cattle raising in Thanh Chuong. Currently, the total herd of buffalo and cows in the commune is in the thousands, of which breeding cows account for a large number. Every year, cattle raising has brought in a good income, opening up a sustainable way to reduce poverty for many farming households.

To encourage the local cow raising movement, on the morning of October 14, the Farmers' Association and the Women's Union of Hanh Lam commune jointly organized a "cow beauty pageant". Responding to this special contest, each hamlet in the commune selected and nominated a household with the most beautiful cow to compete. The contest gathered 12 "contestants" with the most beautiful cows in the commune.

According to the regulations, all the cows participating in the competition have been weighed, measured, and have data on length, chest circumference, weight, breeding time, and specific price. Each cow “contestant” is given a “registration” number for the judges to score. The cows participating in the competition must be fat, beautiful, and give birth to good calves.

The contest has 2 parts: A contest to learn about cattle raising knowledge for cow owners and a direct scoring contest on each cow. After the rounds, the organizing committee selected the owners with the best cattle raising knowledge and the most beautiful cows to award First, Second, Third prizes and many Encouragement prizes to the households.

The “cow beauty pageant” in the border commune has attracted a large number of participants. This is a useful and interesting playground for farmers, an opportunity for them to exchange, learn experiences, improve new knowledge about care techniques, breeding, disease prevention, and encourage the movement of commercial cow farming for many households.
