According to people in Hamlet 3, Khanh Son Commune, there are many cases of red-tailed green pit vipers biting them. Mr. Ha Truc, Hamlet 3 Chief, said: “Recently, people have encountered many red-tailed green pit vipers. The reason why there are many snakes in this area is because it is located in the hills and mountains, with dense trees, which are favorable conditions for snakes to live. In particular, red-tailed green pit vipers have appeared a lot in the past 2 months. There have been cases of people being bitten by red-tailed green pit vipers, but fortunately, they were all taken to the hospital for treatment and had the venom removed in time.” Talking to us, Mr. Dang Van Viet, Chairman of Khanh Son Commune People's Committee, said: "In the face of the increasing number of red-tailed green pit vipers, the commune has called on people to be vigilant when going to the garden. At the same time, it has called on people to participate in killing snakes within 5 days. Starting from October 29, anyone who discovers and kills a red-tailed green pit viper and brings it to the commune People's Committee will be paid 20,000 VND. After the campaign, people in the area have caught and killed 81 snakes."
After receiving information about the appearance of red-tailed green pit vipers and people being bitten by snakes, the People's Committee of Nam Dan district also issued Official Letter No. 1872/CV-UBND, dated October 30, 2014, on strengthening the prevention of red-tailed green pit vipers. Accordingly, it assigned relevant departments, agencies, and People's Committees of communes and towns to deploy proactive prevention measures. The People's Committee of Nam Dan district and the authorities of Khanh Son commune recommended that people should not panic and persist in prevention work. Ms. Le Thi Hang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Dan district, said: "After the departments and Khanh Son commune deployed prevention solutions, so far red-tailed green pit vipers have rarely appeared and there are no more areas where this snake species has appeared."
Thus, the appearance of red-tailed green pit vipers in Khanh Son commune, mainly concentrated in hamlet 3, is real. However, with proactive prevention from the people, as well as active participation from the local authorities, in recent days, no more people have been bitten by snakes. The number of red-tailed green pit vipers discovered by people in the area is also very small.
How to prevent and treat snake bites: People need to clear bushes and drains around their homes to limit snakes from hiding and living there. Red-tailed green pit vipers have more venom than common green pit vipers. When bitten by a snake, the wound bleeds a lot and swells very quickly. People who are bitten by snakes often have blood clotting disorders. If not treated promptly, it will be life-threatening. If bitten by a snake, the victim and those around them must remain calm, need to apply pressure, remove venom and transfer the victim to the hospital as soon as possible. |
